Psychoanalytic Film Club – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a visceral exploration of grief, rage, and the systemic failure of containment. The narrative follows Mildred Hayes, a mother consumed by the unsolved rape and murder of her daughter, who challenges the local police department by commissioning three provocative signs on the outskirts of town. While the plot moves through the escalating tensions between Mildred and Chief Willoughby. The film captures the movement between the paranoid-schizoid position, characterised by splitting and the search for a concrete persecutor, and the fledgling possibilities of the depressive position, where the complexity of the “other” begins to be acknowledged.

The Discussion

Following the screening, our panel of psychoanalysts will explore the psychodynamic themes of stalled mourning and the “manic defence” against unbearable loss. We will consider how Mildred’s rage acts as a precarious shield against a total psychic collapse and how the community of Ebbing functions as a fractured group mind, struggling to hold the projected guilt of an unsolved atrocity.

This event is specifically designed to bridge the gap between seasoned clinical practice and the fresh perspectives of medical students and early-career professionals. By examining the clinical implications of “unthought knowns” through cinema, we aim to demonstrate how psychoanalytic theory provides a vital framework for understanding the patient’s internal world. The discussion is open to all mental health professionals, from those with a passing interest in the field to experienced practitioners.
